ELDER ABUSE INVESTIGATIONS

Elder abuse is the mistreatment of an elderly person by someone known to the senior. Elder abuse can take many forms to include financial abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. The unfortunate truth is that our parents and loved one’s are often abused by the people whom they trust the most, and their cries for help are often discounted due to their age, physical handicaps or diminished mental capacity. This is also what make them such an appealing target for unscrupulous individuals. Elder abuse knows no socio-economic boundaries and can happen to even the best of families. Seniors who are being cared for in expensive assisted living or skilled nursing facilities are also routinely the victims of elder abuse. Because they are viewed as easy targets, trusted caregivers and support staff often steal personal property such as rings, jewelry and cash from their rooms. Missing items are often blamed on the elders poor memory or accidentally throwing the missing item into the trash. Many seniors are also pressured or conned into making personal loans to their caregivers who give them a sob story, or by gifting cash or personal property to their caregivers and/or the family members of the caregiver. Even more troubling are the cases where seniors are being physically abused. The sad reality of this type of abuse is that most abuse goes unreported by our elders as they are fearful of more physical abuse, or that they will be deemed incompetent or shamed by the family for being so gullible.
